How to camp in the High Tatras
Staying overnight out of accommodation facility or camp is prohibited on the whole territory of the Tatras National Park (TANAP), regardless the used manner (staying in a car, caravan or tent, or bivouacking).
There are 6 camps in the piedmont with a capacity of 7000 tents. The booking is required only for really big groups.
For the organised groups of top climbers there is only one alpine camp in Bielovodska valley, where the entry is allowed to those with special written permission issued by the SL TANAP in Tatranska Lomnica, e-mail: sl@tanap.sk. This camp cannot be used by tourists.
When considering the accessibility to tourist paths, the most suitable is the camp in Stara Lesna situated 1 km south-east of tram stop called Stara Lesna Taborisko, which is the only camp offering the rest in the shadow of trees.
On the contrary, to go to Strbske Pleso, it is better to use the cog railway from the camp in Tatranska Strba.
There are three camps in Tatranska Lomnica area, which are accessible by motor train from Poprad through Studeny potok to Tatranska Lomnica, getting off at Eurocamp stop, which is improperly marked in the timetable as "Tatranska Lomnica-stop".
Tatranec - 2 km south-east of Tatranska Lomnica
Eurocamp - 2.5 km south-east of Tatranska Lomnica
Sportcamp - 3 km south-east of Tatranska Lomnica
Staying in these camps will cost you 100 to 200 SKK per person and night and if you add travelling and food costs, health risks and weather typical for alpine environment (frequent rain and mud in July, frost at the end of summer), as well as loss of time to get to the tourist routes, then it seems more suitable to arrange a private accommodation in Tatranska Lomnica, which will cost you 300 SK in main season and 200 SK out of main season.
The facility is equipped with hot and cold water shower, kitchen to prepare meals, so you save money on boarding-out.
This offer is worth thinking not only by tourists with own income, but mainly students, who value their time.
You can find information on inexpensive accommodation on e-mail: info@tanap.sk
The camping-loving romantics are recommended to concentrate on other Slovak regions, e.g. Slovensky Raj.
